W-4 and UK spouse
« on: March 11, 2014, 06:13:36 PM »
Hi all,

I need some advice on how to complete a W-4 after marriage to a UK spouse who remains in the UK.

My UK husband and I married last month. I am back in the US until we meet the financial requirements for the UK visa. Since I am married, I have to fill out a new W-4 for my employer. Does anyone have advice on how to fill out this form when your spouse lives in the UK (and will at no point live in the US)?

Thanks!

Your best bet is: If you won't be taking a tax exemption for your husband don't count him in the number of exemptions; if you are do count him. The form's purpose is to determine how much to hold out for taxes, so whether or not you should have less taken out because of your marriage depends on whether or not you'll take a spousal exemption.
