Name on Taxes?
« on: March 27, 2014, 03:46:27 PM »
This might might be a stupid question, I don't know...but should I file this years tax return in my maiden name?

Basically I got married in August, have been in the UK the entire 2013 tax year (save for a couple of short visits) had no income in 2013, but paid student loans so believe I'll get a refund based on that interest and thus will be in my interest to file...

I just now sent my passport renewal off, so everything for all of 2013 was in my maiden name. So I'm guessing I would file in my maiden name for 2013...and then as I'll have everything changed over in 2014 file next year in my married name.

Is that correct? I feel really stupid for asking but I'd rather ask then assume!

Your filing should be based on your name, marital status, etc. as of December 31st.

Yeah that hasn't changed yet so that answers it then.

Another question, didn't want to start a new thread...Started plugging information into TaxAct and it's saying I can't claim student loan interest deduction because I'm married filing separately. Is this true?

If so there's not much point in my filing as I had no income in 2013 at all. Is this going to raise some type of red flag since I've been filing taxes for the past 10 years and will again next year as I will have foreign income?

I know I still need to file an FBAR for my foreign account that went over 10k for a bit but that should be my only liability this year if I had no income, right?

Yep, married filing separately doesn't let you claim the student loan interest deduction. It sucks!
Arrived as student 9/2003; Renewed student visa 9/2006; Applied for HSMP approval 1/2008; HSMP approved 3/2008; Tier 1 General FLR received 4/2008; FLR(M) Unmarried partner approved (in-person) 27/8/2009; ILR granted at in-person PEO appointment 1/8/2011; Applied for citizenship at Edinburgh NCS 31/10/2011; Citizenship approval received 4/2/2012
FINALLY A CITIZEN! 29/2/2012
