Travelling with child
« on: April 22, 2014, 12:27:36 PM »
Hello,

I need some advice... I wanted to travel back to the usa with my son before he turns two in june but we have moved recently and I can not seem to find his USA passport.  Do you think I could travel there using his UK passport and deal with getting a replacement when I get back?  or is this illegal?  any info would be greatly appreciated.
sorry if this is the wrong forum wasnt sure?

It is technically illegal. All US citizens are required to enter on their US passports. However there have been many people who have taken them on their British passports and haven't had a problem. The worst I've heard is that they just get a stern talking to by the IO and are told that next time they need to come on their US one. It's an at your own risk kind of thing but I'm sure it would be fine. But thats just my opinion.

I believe you should report the passport as missing and apply for a new one.  It is a lot of hassle, I know.  My (adult) son's US passport had expired so he flew from US to UK on his British one and then had to go to the Embassy for a temporary one.  He had to put up with a lot of attitude at immigration coming back.  He then had to apply for a new US passport once back in the US.

Besides, if the child is travelling on a UK passport, he/she would need to apply for ESTA I would think.
