Applying for US and UK passport appointments while pregnant

Hi,

My wife (a US citizen) and I (British) live in the UK. My wife is due to give birth to our first child in May this year. We plan on flying to see her family in the US in July - exactly nine weeks after the due date. I would like to book appointments to get both a UK and a US passport for the baby but in both systems (US website and UKBA telephone booking system) you have to give the baby's name and date of birth. We don't know the sex of the baby so can't give the name and (obviously!) don't know the  birth date. Does anyone have experience of this situation? Is it possible to give provisional information to book the appointment and then provide the real information at the appointment?

I think leaving booking the appointments until after the baby is born might be cutting things fine (especially if the baby is late!) so I'd prefer to do it now.

I have heard there is a work around, so I'm sure someone will be along shortly to tell you what it is.  Or if you look through the sticky "consular notification of birth abroad thingy" you will find it in there somewhere.

I just had a baby and I'm having to wait nearly 5 weeks for an appointment to register the birth, which you have to do before you go to the embassy as you need the birth certificate.  You may want to find out what the wait times are like for that before you get too far with the embassy.    Hopefully your area is better than mine.

Use the due date as the birthdate and call it baby 'your last name' - you'll bring the correct application to the appointment so it shouldn't be a problem. Others have done that here and haven't had a problem.

Thank you both for your help. I'll book a date with the US embassy for the US passport using 'provisional' data!

Do you have any experience of this with applying for a UK passport. I tried calling to make an appointment and giving the due date but they insisted the birth date had to be in the past. I'm tempted to just make up a date and try and change it later. Has anyone done this and not had problems later on?

But to be honest the baby can just travel on the US passport and you can get the UK passport later if it is a huge palaver. A US citizen has to travel to the US on an US passport, the same is not true of the UK.

The only problem with that is when they come back on the US passport, they will be stamped on a 6 month visitor visa. Not sure what kind of implications that would have in the long run.

Thanks again for the responses. The reason I had been interested in getting both passports was to avoid having to use the US passport to re-enter the UK as I'm unclear about the whole visitor visa situation. I'd hazard a guess that if we get the UK passport before the visitor visa expires that perhaps the next time we leave the UK (within the 6 months) we could use the US passport and then when we return to the UK we could use the UK passport. Seems like it might be our only option if we can't get both passports in time!
