Importing Seasonings and Condiments
« on: May 25, 2014, 11:29:03 AM »
Would there be an import problem with putting together a package of herbs and spices and condiments to be shipped to myself after we settle in to our new home in the UK?  I understand from the moving company that they will not pack any food of any kind, but I'm already lonely for my spice shelves and unopened bottles of green taco sauce!

I will be honest I don't know the official rules- but my mom posts spices through regular mail quite routinely to us- never had a problem.

Same here.  I've brought home all sorts of things.  All sealed in their store bought packages with no issue.

I'm not sure about shipping but I've brought things over with no problem - hot sauce (like the big bottles you can only get at Costco/BJs), dried ranch dressing mix, kosher salt (sea salt is NOT the same!!), cake flour, shortening...

I've taken packaged foodstuffs to and from the US and UK but ran into a problem when we shipped our belongings. The official stance was that no foodstuffs whatsoever could be shipped, and we stuck to that rule as we didn't want to be the 1% who had their shipping container examined.

Thanks for the info, everyone.   Sounds like a "care package" will do the trick.   I certainly agree with not wanting to have all our household goods held up at customs!

@fruitgum....interesting...we shipped spices and a variety of food with no issues. Obviosly no meat/fresh went in the container, but lots of tins and bottles did.
