Operation Street Sweep

Last week this was discussed in a thread (which I can't find now), and some were incredulous.  Briefly, this combined police/IND operation targets people who look, or sound, foreign with the intent of catching immigration offenders.

The operation got a *scathing* review in "The New Statesman", but at least they uphold my prediction that the operation is going to expand to other parts of the UK.  Cite:

My friend survived his encounter with the Immigration Service. But how many other innocent passengers have been pulled aside as they push through Tube barriers, to then face an interrogation of up to 40 minutes? There can be no doubt that for these people looking "foreign" made life difficult. Indeed, it is all too often their only crime.
