How do you find out if there are tickets on a car in the US?
« on: October 19, 2014, 12:36:07 PM »
This may be the wrong area to post this, so if it is I do apologise.

My name is on a car loan with my ex husband. There is a reason he's my ex. Only he can get my name removed by redoing the loan through GMC or a bank in his name. He refuses to. (Then rarely pays it) GMC holds the title but both our names are on the loan. He has the car in the US. When I left the plates were registered to me. Asking him for this information (If his phone number is even the same) will be pointless, he likes to punish and withold info to get his jollies. (The last 3 years he was suppose to get the car loan in his name, but I get emails every month from GMC saying he is 20+ days late paying etc)

How can I find out/who can I call to see if there have been any accidents/tickets etc on the car? I don't even know if he lives in the same state. I am applying for ILR next month and I don't want to find out that there has been some issue with the car and that I'm in some sort of trouble because he might be using my plates still etc if he hasn't moved.
Keepin' it real. Real annoying.

Tickets in the US are on the driver.  Not on the plate of the car being driven.

Was the vehicle addressed in your divorce decree?  I would have thought he would be required to move the vehicle solely into his name.

It won't affect ILR for you.

Oh, man - the feels. I have an ex. We'd been together for about 3 years and I bought him a motorcycle (old, used - a few hundred dollars). Titled and insured in my name to keep it a surprise so he could drive it straight away. We split up about 6 months later, and when the insurance was due up, he told me he had reinsured it. BIG SUPRISE - he hadn't, then got a ticket for driving uninsured, then kept saying he'd give me the money that I was being fined for his motorcycle, never did. He junked the motorcycle, plates attached, and I ended up paying a three thousand dollar fine to the state of Maryland for the fines and non-payment penalties.
I hate that dude so much.
But it had no bearing on my application and I've got ILR now, so there's that. And a kickass husband who's nothing like that doucher ex.

Thanks for the replies, I just didn't want any surprises when applying. I'm glad that any of his possible hijynx wouldn't affect my ILR.
KFDancer: No the car was not addressed during our divorce, we did it quick and easy. No judges or attorneys. Everything was verbal, which was pretty dumb.

Eatoomey: Wow... I feel for you, what a cruddy thing for your ex to do. Then again nothing surprises me with exes anymore  >:( Well, I guess looking on the bright side you are with a great man now.
