Has anyone used the IRS at the London embassy?
« on: January 27, 2015, 02:45:30 PM »
I have a very simple tax set-up so just need some basic advice. For the last two years I've sent money I thought I owed but then the IRS returned it (refunded it) with no explanation. I just need someone to look, for example, at my last year's tax return and tell me what I'm doing wrong. Will the IRS unit at the embassy be able to do that? Or should I say be willing to do that...... It's an all-day trip into the embassy from where I live, so I don't want to waste my time.

I've seen a few ads in the "American in Britain" magazine for tax preparers but they charge hundreds of pounds and I don't think I need that much tax advice! My situation is pretty straight-forward. So if anyone has been to the IRS unit, can you please tell me what they will/will not do?

Thanks.

I don't know if the IRS office in London offers that type of service, but I do know that they are closing very soon, so if you are going to seek advice from them, do so quickly.

Honestly though I think a better option would be to have an accountant review your return. During a tax review an accountant can go over your return and make sure you were filing in the most beneficial way.

Best of all a tax review does not have to be expensive. I know we personally charge less than a hundred dollars, and it would save you a trip to London!

Thanks for the information. I did look on theLondon embassy/IRS website but can't find any information about closing. I'm definitely interested in having an accountant look at it if it's less than £100, however! I looked at your website and the price says flat fee £367 so??? Anyway, I've bookmarked your website for future reference. Thanks for that!

If you tell us a bit about your circumstances and return we might be able to offer some suggestions.

You have a nice problem though.

A tax review is different than standard tax preparation, and it takes less time (thus costs less).

It is a great idea for people who want to file on their own... Particularly because they can have a second set of eyes review and make sure everything was filed properly.

I hope this helps!

As nun says if you explain the kinds of issues you have, other contributors to this forum may be pleased to help.

You could also think of calling a dual qualified US/UK tax adviser in the UK who may be able to give you some insight.
