Confused about Child Benefit
« on: September 05, 2014, 07:39:45 PM »
Hi all - I'm really hoping someone can clarify whether I'm entitled to child benefit. I'm American and my husband is British...we live here in the U.K and I am on a spouse visa. We are expecting to our first baby next month (!)

I have read that as a foreign national I am not entitled to any public funds (including child benefit). But is this still the case if my child is a British citizenship? Or does my husband have to apply for it. I REALLY don't want to break any rules (but certainly wouldn't mind the extra help if I -we - are indeed entitled to it). Can anyone advise? x

Your husband is allowed to apply for it.

Even better, it can go directly into your bank account as well (if you've got separate ones). So HE applies for it, signs everything, etc - but if you want to, it's fine for it to go into your bank account.
