Study on Excessive Crying in Babies

They seem to see a relationship between excessive crying beyond 3 months old, and later development of ADD/ADHD, and other problems too.

My son who's now 5, cried way beyond three months, he still doesn't sleep through the night a good percentage of the time. He had speech delays, and we see attention problems. I wonder if anyone else has similar experiences?

My son is now 4.5 months and cries for what we an see no reason. He is not sleeping through the night and this study made me think. I hope that I do not have trouble with him in later years, but I still will worry.

I wouldn't worry just yet if I were you, it's still early. If it's still happening after 6-9 months, I'd be questioning the doctors if possible. Sorry you're going through it, it's so rough when they're crying and we can't help them, or sleep. 

Well, I wish I could say that Dagmar had "early symptoms" but there was nothing.  She didn't cry more than any other baby and was always a good sleeper-so although the link is intriguing, and may help predict future problems, I guess it isn't an absolute indicator.

Boys also tend to be worse sleepers than girls in my experience.  Granted, that experience is based solely on anecdotal evidence since it seems I will never have a son of my own.

But everyone I know who's had both says that the boys were definitely worse-worse sleepers, cried more, wanted to be fed more, etc.  So don't get worried just yet, ukladybug.  There's plenty of time for you to freak out about his mental state, physical state, ability to live a normal life, ability to make friends/throw a ball/spell/read/drive/play ball/do math/get into college/not be a serial killer.  It's all ahead of you-what a joy!

One of my professors at the Univ. of London (he supervises us Child Development/Psych. Master's students) has done a *ton* of research in this area. His name is Ian St. James-Roberts and he's well worth looking up if you're interested in crying babies!

None of mine slept regularly through the night until about 9 months, and after that still woke every now and then until toddlers as many small children do. They are all grown up, well adjusted, did well at school etc. Those sleepless nights are awful at the time but do eventually become a distant memory!

Oh, I should mention though that my little one is developmentally delayed but no diagnosis of ADHD or anything else-they finally ruled out autism a few months ago.  So it's just a generic delay.
