Hello from SC
« on: September 26, 2014, 08:49:47 PM »
Hi everyone,

I am southern (Not a yankee! lol) and my husband is British.  He has been living over here for almost three years now, we bought a house and he has a job here and all is well except that...we are thinking about selling everything and moving over there.  His son is there, and his Mum, and the rest of his wonderful family (whom I adore) and I frankly am looking forward to being over there.  This will not be for another two years at least, my youngest is a sophomore in high school so this will be when we are "empty nesters".  But I feel guilty for the thought of leaving my kids behind, my parents who are not spring chickens any longer (what happens if one of them gets sick?) and a lot of good friends.

I also think, he did that for me, and he deserves to be with his family too.  And I love adventures and travel and meeting new people.  So if we can work it out financially, I can see this happening.  But I hope to meet a few people here who can provide me with some moral support as we proceed with our plans.  I am already looking around my house and deciding what I'm going to sell.  And it's just about everything...I don't need all this stuff, I'd rather have money to move and buy cool new things over there.

My name is Claudia, claudpepper is a good user name because I am a landscape architect and avid gardener. And I love spicy food. My husband is from Belfast, Northern Ireland so he's "Brirish" (Northern Irish and British) :)

Hello there!

I was excited by your name and being Floridian quite intrigued.

One thing he is noted for in Florida is a speech given by his competitor George Smathers, who while playing up Pepper's leftie tendencies said to a supposedly redneck crowd:

Are you aware that Claude Pepper is known all over Washington as a shameless extrovert? Not only that, but this man is reliably reported to practice nepotism with his sister-in-law, he has a brother who is a known homo sapiens, and he has a sister who was once a thespian in wicked New York. Worst of all, it is an established fact that Mr. Pepper, before his marriage, habitually practiced celibacy.

Welcome!

Hi CP!

I am also a Southerner [Rural West Georgia] planning to execute a move to the UK in a couple of years, except we are moving our small kids and two pets, so our expenses will be much higher than yours, I'd imagine.  My hubby has been here for 9 years [he came to ATL to get his Masters at GaTech] and we met not long after and got married a year later.

My hubs is from East Yorkshire and is feeling rather homesick. He has only been home a total of 4 times since he came here.  Mostly due to our total inability to plan and save, lol.  Every time we get a plan in place, something comes up. Death and Taxes and Childbirth, eh? Our latest setback has been the expectation of our [SURPRISE] third child, due in April.

Anyway, I've done quite a bit of research and planning, so if you have any questions, shoot them my way!  Looks like we will remain in the planning phase for at least another two years. Maybe we can ship all of our stuff together!? Apparently we can save a couple of grand if we ship from port to port instead of door to door [including uhauls, hotels etc.], and our nearest port is Charleston.

Good luck with your plans and welcome to the forum!

Fellow SC-er here!  I'm from Greenville (Travelers Rest, if you have any idea where that is, LOL.)  Went to College of Charleston.  Currently living in Japan... but hoping to be in the UK with my fiance in the next few years.

What part of SC are you from?  Be sure to being plenty of DUKES MAYONNAISE with you when you move!  Lol!  It's the thing I miss most when I'm far from home!  Nothing like it!

Would love to chat with you sometime if you like!
Will sell soul for Duke's Mayonnaise.

Love, Jerry

Haha. I'm also pining after SC mustard based bbq sauce and Peter Pan peanut butter. The PB here doesn't really qualify as peanut butter for me.

We used to get a SC bbq sauce down in Florida, can't remember the brand, but I really grew to like it. Especially with pork.

But I must say that not liking the peanut butter here has helped me a lot personally. I can destroy a jar of Peter Pan or Jiff. I mean a jar with a spoon and a loaf of white bread and a gallon of milk and I go into this trance....brow sweating....dark, hopeless thoughts...it's terrible. It has to be done alone...out of sight. People say bad things about Elvis and his diet....but I understand. If I had met Elvis, I would have reached out and touched his arm and said, "Elvis, I understand."

I don't miss it at all....though McVittie's Milk Chocolate Digestives can sometimes lead to a similar break in will power.

You're better than I am. I just need a spoon in order to devour a jar of Peter Pan. I suppose it is a plus though. I was attempting to scarf down some peanut butter before my run yesterday as I hadn't eaten much and couldn't get past one spoonful. No wonder the  Brits aren't enamoured with peanut butter; all of theirs tastes terrible.
