Can I work remotely for a US employer while living in the UK?
« on: November 13, 2014, 10:50:57 AM »
Can I take freelance jobs with US employers while living in the UK?

I am a US/EU dual national living in the UK. I still have a California address and a US bank account.

I have a full-time job in the UK, but the company is having financial problems, so I am looking for a bit more safety in case the company is insolvent (again). I am an editor.

Can I take freelance work in the US? Specifically, I am interested in a part-time, long-term job through an agency. I can do the job remotely.

Is this legal, and are there any tax obligations/complications that would arise from this?

As an EU citizen you can be self employed in another EU country, but watch for more new EU rules Germany wants, part of which will affect some EU citizens working as self employed in another EU country. Both major policital parties in the UK have already said they will adopt those new rules for the UK if Merkel gets EU law changed.

The UK will want your taxes if you reside in the UK. I'm not sure how this will affect your tax liabilty to the US.
