My (hopefully) funny blog on living as an expat in the UK
« on: October 28, 2014, 07:50:05 AM »
Hello all,

I've been a lurker on UK Yankee for a number of years, and the site and its community has been really helpful in my adjustment from moving from the U.S. to Britain. Hard to believe, but we're now in our 10th year living in Blighty.

I can't pretend to have any great insight to moving/living over here, but I do (hopefully) have a sense of humor (humour) about it, so a few months ago I started a blog. It's really just meant to be more funny than useful. Let me know what you think:

My most recent post about why the Brits hate Halloween has become instantly my most popular: http://expatclaptrap.com/british-hate-halloween-really/

Hope someone out there enjoys it and relates to it.

Thanks

Well you managed to slip in a Scatman Crothers reference (the voice of Hong Kong Fuey) so I will be investigating!!
I just hope that more people will ignore the fatalism of the argument that we are beyond repair. We are not beyond repair. We are never beyond repair. - AOC

Halloween post a riot  :D  DS can never understand the students in UK marching off to the pub in "fancy dress"!  Never seen in US -- except for Halloween!

Hello expat rat, welcome to UKY! I just read your blog, Hahahaha I love it! So different from most of the US/UK blogs that seem to take themselves waaaaaay too seriously :-/, look at MEEEEEEEE! I moved to ENGLAND and you did NOT. ugh.

I do like your Canada one, http://expatclaptrap.com/test-post/ I laughed as it has happened to me!   ;D

Thanks for the kind words- My goal is really just to be funny with this blog. But there's truth in all of the posts I've done so far. I still have never met a Canadian expat in the UK who didn't work the word "Canada" into their first few sentences at least 11 times.

And I've definitely heard the name "Dick Van Dyke" since moving over here nearly two dozen times. They sure do love him.

Great blog post on Halloween.  I've noticed that because they have a culture of 'fancy dress' for everything from hen parties to charity races that when it comes to Halloween it *has* to be something scary which is just so different from how Americans approach the dressing up aspect at Halloween.

I've just updated my blog with a risk assessment comparing the risks of life in the UK versus the USA. http://expatclaptrap.com/expatriate-risk-assessment/

I'll post about new postings to the UK-Yankee general chit chat forum from now on.
