I'm new to the site, though I've been living in the UK for almost 2 years now. I originally came over on an expat assignment in Dundee (lived in Broughty Ferry for those familiar with Scotland). It was supposed to be an 18 month assignment, with me returning to the US (Delaware Valley) after I completed the project. My husband stayed State-side since his company couldn't support him in Scotland on a 'short-term' assignment. Since our kids are all grown and gone, it was something we could make work with lots of trips back and forth across the pond.
Towards the end of my assignment, my company asked me if I'd stay and 'localise.' My husband's company has UK operations (in Reading), and they agreed that they'd employ him here, working from that office. So, I moved down to Hitchin in order to commute to Royston and London (my company's HQ offices), and he started the process to get a UK work visa and employment contract. Given that our kids are all out of college, one married (but no babies yet), and the others all working / independent, we decided this was the perfect time to do this sort of thing.
After several months, we are finally, nearly there - he's in Boston waiting for his passport / visa, and will be here soon.
I decided to look into US expat sites as a means of finding others in the area. My work involves a considerable amount of travel, so I haven't really gotten involved in much (besides work and church) up to this point. Since he'll now be here, I figure it's time to actually settle in and make some friends
