Hi all--

Apologies if this has been answered elsewhere in the forums, but my father's here for a three week visit from America and he's not got enough medicine (actually only enough for three days).

I'm thinking I should go to my GP and have him seen as a private patient, for which he will have to pay for the visit and then for the medicine.  Have I missed a trick or other way to get this sorted ASAP?

Any help anyone can offer is Very much appreciated!

That is how I registered while on my visitor's visa - as a private patient.  It didn't take long and was a short form I had to fill out. The doctor's surgery here called the British Medical Assoc. to find out how much to charge me since they were unfamiliar with asking for payments.  I was charged 17 gbp per prescription written (which added up when I needed 2 to 3 written each month!) and 43 for the initial consultation (which was about 10 or 15 minutes and just consisted of the doctor asking me about my situation, why the medications were prescribed, and, if necessary, finding the closest equivalents available here).

Hopefully that will work for your father, but I'll admit to surprise that he can't get a travel override prescription from his US doctor for a 3 week visit.  It would be much easier for him if he could,  I assume he's tried his best to get enough Rx for his visit though....

Good luck and I hope you have a wonderful visit.  :)

You are completely correct, your father needs to pay for the visit and all medicines and you may be able to find a private GP in your area. If he visits an NHS doctor the practice may not wish to bill him because it is additional administration for them.
