What was/is your first RHD car?
« on: February 13, 2015, 04:50:14 PM »
My husband and I bought a used Vauxhall Astra a week ago and are loving it so far. I'm doing all the driving because he's still learning, so it's a trial by fire.

I do like the car. I had been told that Vauxhalls are ''old lady cars'', but this one is sporty, roomy and practical. That's a combination I rarely see. Where we live there are mountain roads with scary curves. It handles them quite well, even in the rain (which it does most days).

There's no winning at that. If you got an Audi, they'd say you were a pretentious pillock.

Mine was a big ol' Nissan Patrol 2.8 petrol 4x4. No half measures!  ;)

The boy racers round these parts would beg to differ!
A Nissan Micra seems more of an old lady car to me...

I learned to drive full-stop in England at the age of 28. My husband bought me a brand-new 1998 yellow Citroen Saxo Open Scandal. It had a 1.0 litre engine so it was like a golf cart but had a full-length sun roof. I named it "Chiquita" because it was small (the word means "tiny" in Spanish) and yellow. I loved that car. Sadly, I was in the blind spot of a huge lorry and ran right into me and completely crushed the car. I was lucky to walk out of it without a scrape. I didn't mourn for it long as I got a brand-new 1999 Mazda MX5 Miata convertible in a sort of copper/ gold.

My younger brother and I both drive Nissan Micras - I have a newer style silver one and he drives my mum's little old blue one (which he has attempted to 'soup up', but it hasn't quite worked, lol).

I like to think that I have an aura of masculinity about me, but for some reason I find the smaller sort of bubblish cars very appealing: Micras, Citroens, Fiat...

Good mileage, easy to park....

These reviewers always say the same things, "But out of the motorway, deep into a long trip..." How many long trips to people take?

"In the snow it felt low and under-powered....." The three days of heavy snow?

Mine was a Nissan 350z.

Ooohh!!!!

I had a Nissan Altima, 3.5L V6 manual in the US, ahh, she was a fun car! She went 0-60 in 3.5 seconds.  My Dad still has her, which means I get to drive her when I go visit. Hehehe.

I bought a Honda Civic when I moved here, which I loved to bits and wish I still had. She was like a Tardis when it came to fitting things and she drove like a dream.    Thanks to some shoddy snow ploughing by the Morayshire council, she ended up getting destroyed.  I still mourn her loss.

After having a Ford Focus estate car that was 13 years old and wasn't worth fixing when it failed it's MOT, I pooled resources with my other half and we now have a Kuga, which we're definitely enjoying.

J's dream car is an Aston Martin, but I'd take a VW Campervan, a proper oldschool Mini or Beetle, Citron 2CV, or a Land Rover Defender any day!
I've never gotten food on my underpants!

My first RHD vehicle was the Toyota Hilux pick-up that was already in use on the croft.  I was perfectly happy with it, but with three people in the house, we needed something with more than 2 seats.  Plus, it would have made for an expensive commute.

The first car we bought after I got here was a Renault Modus.  I did appreciate a lot of things about it; unfortunately, the stability of its electrical system and its fuel usage were not amongst those.  Still, we made do for 3 years, and I'd probably still be driving it had it not developed an unfortunate fault which required the headlight stalk to be kept pushed forward (to activate the hi-beam switch) in order for there to be any lights, at all.  I ignored it all summer, as I was never out late enough for it to be a problem, but I had to ditch it in September, or I wouldn't have been able to get home from work in the evenings.

I've now got a Vauxhall Meriva, and so far, so good.  Despite it being a larger car, with a larger engine, I'm saving about £50/month on fuel!  It's also a lot more comfy for my husband, and a bit more practical all around.

Not in standard spec it didn't!!
0-60 time that quick is FIRMLY in Supercar territory ! unless your car had been 'modified' then I'd expect the actual time to have been 7.5 seconds :)

GA to Wales - There's a quite a few 'performance' variants in the Vauxhall range of cars, always has been. A 'few' have reached classic status and at one time around in the early 90's they produced the world fastest 4 door saloon car ! - old lady's cars they weren't !!

Cheers, DtM! West London & Slough UK!
