Getting to hate TurboTax
« on: March 09, 2015, 12:31:21 AM »
I was going over the form before I send it in.......I was hoping to start the whole form over, but TurboTax won't let you if you have paid......it will let you amend it though. I have to mail it in, so I didn't hit the "complete" button at the end of my inputs.

The paranoia I'm having is that I sold about $125K of Vanguard in 2014 with a gain of about $17K. When I use the import from Vanguard function only the dividend info shows up. The sales of regular mutual funds don't show up......the only thing I can think of is because my income is low it allowed the gain to not be taxed. I have imported several times and nothing changes.....so I am assuming it has done it correctly. But......paranoia is wanting me to at least see the numbers somewhere on the forms.

Definitely need to get the desktop version of TurboTax for next year.....

I sold some Vanguard ETF shares last year and although I could see the 1099-B in the Tax Centre after I logged in, the import didn't bring in the 1099-B for some reason. (It did bring in the 1009-DIV which included dividends and distributed cap gains).

I then manually added the 1099-B, which was important to me as it was a cap loss which reduced the taxes I owe.  I suggest you compare the forms on the VG website and be sure they are in your tax return.

I have the desktop version of TurboTax.

Jeez, I don't get it. I went back in and just added the gains from the funds I sold......didn't change my refund so I assume that it took the import from Vanguard the first time but just didn't bother to show it (why? I have no idea). Now if I understand things right.....I put down the info for my wife having a foreign account but it still said I could efile. I thought if you needed to do FATCA/8938 that you had to mail it in? We had about $64K in her account at the end of 2014. Although it did remind me to do FBAR during the process.

You should not have to assume anything from the import.  When you log into Vanguard and go to the Tax Center it will list each of your tax forms, 1099-DIV, 1099-R 1099-B etc.  Go to the forms view in TT and you should see each of those forms in your return, either imported or if you entered them manually.

If you are MFJ then the 8938 limit should be way above the $64k limit, so I wouldn't expect that an 8938 is necessary, if it was then TT would include it.  I've never had to file an 8938, and last year I had $66k in a UK bank account.  Just FBAR for me.

Thanks. I think I saw something that said $100K and higher numbers so maybe I can do it. I just keep thinking how much easier it would be if I just filed married/separate. Might not be the smartest thing money-wise.....but just easier.

Just looked it up again......I think for filing jointly the numbers are more like $400K to $600K to set things in motion for FATCA.

And the FBAR doesn't go to the IRS anyway.....correct? Well.....maybe I can get the refund before we leave the country. Right now we are shooting for 10 April and I am just waiting for another day or so for my wife's parents letter with the Land Registry to get here so I can start the visa process.

FBAR is e-file only with the Treasury Department, not the IRS. The due date is June 30.

Sounds to me like you don't need to file the 8938.
Married December 1992 (my 'old flame' whom I first met in the mid-70s)
1st move to UK - 1993 (Letter of Consent granted at British Embassy in Washington DC)
ILR - 1994 (1 year later - no fee way back then!)
Back to US in 2000
Returned to UK July 2011 (Spousal Visa/KOL endorsement)
ILR - September 2011
Application for naturalization submitted July 2014
Approval received 15-10-14; ceremony scheduled for 10 November!
Passport arrived 25 November 2014. Finally done!

Yeah, durhamlad clued me in on that one a few days ago. I could have swore somebody a couple of months ago had told me something about if you needed to file FATCA, that would cover the FBAR as well.........probably just me getting it mixed up. Looks like FBAR is all I need, although I am trying to figure out a way not to trigger the FATCA for 2015. Once we sell the house and move our cash over we will be over the $400K limits.....won't hit the $600K so I will need to go re-read that part and see if I can juggle the money around enough. Although from what I have seen of the FATCA paperwork......not much to it.
