Edinburgh Trams

Does anyone have any thoughts on the Edinburgh tram system? I am a big light rail fan, but was it worth it? It looks really nice.....but it's just one line.

Exactly. A very expensive, glorified bus route.

Well I do hate a bus. Being on the far left....if we are looking to the bus to solve the problems of modern mass transport....I think we are sunk. And I don't drive so I use the bus a lot.

I love the tram systems in Milan and Brussels (though Brussels may be more of a Metro). My ideal way of getting about....but I was reading about the one in Edinburgh...and the total cost jumped out.

I was wondering if, after all the cost and disruption, people who use it now think, "Wow this is great!" Or more like, "For a trillion pounds this is pretty crappy."

It's lovely and very easy to use, but it's slow and expensive for what it is!

When I think of really good trams, I think of the Budapest ones. Those are fabulous!

Leeds wanted a tram system but now are (still, I believe) investigating a trolley-bus system.  I don't think any of these schemes are going to curtail people from wanting to drive into the city centre.  I really noticed the increase in traffic in just the dozen or so years I had been away.

Haven't used the Edinburgh trams but it does look nice.
