Travel Insurance

Hello. I have been in the UK on my spousal visa for almost 4 months now. My husband and I are taking a belated honeymoon in July to Cyprus and I was wondering if someone could help me in regards to travel insurance. While I know that I am eligible for treatment on the NHS, I do not know if that extends abroad. I'm assuming it does not and I want to get travel insurance. Since I have taken up permanent residence here in the UK, am I eligible to purchase travel insurance through UK companies? Or do I have to buy it through American companies? Would anyone happen to know?
Also - I am very confused how the NHS works abroad. My husband says that the NHS covers him anywhere in Europe, but I do not understand how that works. Would it be smart to get him medical travel insurance as well?

You need an EHIC card (free) and travel insurance, which you can purchase in the UK, as a UK resident. Any costs from using your EHIC card now have to come out of travel insurance, if you have appropriate cover, due to changes last year.
