Anything I should be doing now?
« on: July 30, 2015, 03:22:25 PM »
Back in the UK for over 3 months now.....house bought (so much for taking our time).... now time to start at least planning for the evil taxes to come. I went back and started re-reading the thread from last November I started...  http://talk.uk-yankee.com/index.php?topic=84253.30  and again.....I started to drool a lot. At the time I was almost ready to think I could do my taxes....now it's all drained away and I know nothing again. I wouldn't doubt at all that I just fork up the money to have a competent (I hope) tax person do things for me for at least the first year. Things I need to think about is whether I want to file US taxes jointly or separately this year...  How to keep things in both of our names until I complete the visa process in almost 5 more years......

Any recommendations on things I can do right now to simplify things?

Congratulations on buying a house and settling into your desired location so quickly. We are a year behind you, and cheering you on.  Our situation is different in that we are both dual UK/US citizens but I'm still interested in the advice you'll receive on the best options for filing your taxes.
Dual USC/UKC living in the UK since May 2016

Yep....all our plans went kaput. Planned on moving into the south of Huddersfield area.....then when checking that area, all the houses we really wanted to look at were gone. So what do we do??? We fall back to Harrogate.

I will read again through that post from November, there was LOTS of good info in that long thread. But now reality has set in.....I need to get as much info as I can and try to plan ahead. People like nun have the ability to remember this stuff.....I'm worthless. Should I do my US taxes as joint or separate? I really need to take some copious notes and tape them to my wall......moving to the UK isn't easy.....but I'm sure glad I'm back. Likely to stop my US health insurance this year since we went over on the house purchase.
