Neighborhood recommendations in the York City area?
« on: May 29, 2015, 08:36:16 PM »
I know I am way ahead of myself as I haven't received my spousal approval yet, but I need to busy myself as I wait.  We plan to move to York, within the city itself for numerous reasons, would just love to hear opinions about the area. We are have an almost 4 year old child and plan to work in York.   I haven't been there in several years!  Thanks :)

I live in York!!! York is a fantastic city! We live in the Bishy Road/Southbank area, which is quite trendy with little cafes and the like. We used to live in Fishergate - the house was great but there weren't many corner shops/ cafes nearby. Both are about a 10-20 minute walk to the city centre proper. The only areas to avoid really are Acomb and Tang Hall (in the West and East parts of the City). Even these areas aren't actually 'bad.' Just be aware the the city is twice the price of villages 20-30 minutes drive away. In the City Walls will have super small houses. For the same price just outside the walls the houses get about 1/3 bigger.

Good luck with the move!
2004-2008: Student Visa

2013-2016: New Tier 2 (changed jobs)
16/12/15: SET (LR) successful! - It's been a long road...
12/05/16: Citizenship ceremony!

Thanks!  We are ok with being in or outside the city walls. We are self employed and plan to start business up again in York, where we live now, I walk to work. I've told my husband I refuse to move to a walking friendly country and have to drive to work. :)
I appreciate the tips!

I'm jealous! York is my favorite place in the world. As I type this I am looking up at an old etching I have hanging in my office of The Shambles :)  I really wanted to live there but at least where we're moving to it's a fairly short drive across the border to visit.  I can't wait to see your updates on how you like it there!

We nearly moved to Bootham (just outside the wall) once.  Seemed a good area at that time.

While I can't really recommend anywhere as I live in Reading - much further south - I just wanted to say we visited York on our anniversary road trip last year in August and I LOVED it! The viking museum was brill! haha I only wish we had more time there to explore! [we only spent a short day/overnight there on our way to Scotland]. What a great choice! :D
My, how time flies....
