US electricals for sale
« on: June 09, 2015, 01:31:28 PM »
Anyone moving back to the States?

I have a red KitchenAid mixer and a Vitamix, both with US plugs that I stupidly brought to the UK. (It will cost me £300 to get a converter for them!).

Both have been used but are in a good condition.

Interested? £100 for both. Pickup in Fulham.

Before you sell these - assuming you can - check out transformers made for building sites. Big and ugly, but also relatively cheap. For example, an Artisan series mixer is 325 watts; allowing at least 10% for surge, you need a transformer that supports about 400 watts.

This bad boy (we have one that's similar) is rated for 3K watts, and is <£65: http://www.screwfix.com/p/portable-transformer-with-2-output-sockets-3kva/84144

We put the required plug for the transformer on a heavy duty US surge strip (miniscule cost), replacing the US 3-prong plug. Works a treat. DH uses all of his US tools and I use for a couple of my larger US appliances. Years back, we had 3 of these and used for tons of stuff. Not pretty, but far cheaper than replacing appliances.

If I wasn't in the north of England I would snap your hand off and grab these appliances :-)

Thanks for the link Vadio - we're currently deciding what electric things to bring over.   I'd found more expensive step down transformers:

I had no idea that UK building sites used 110v.   Your link would be useful for garden tools (hedge trimmer, strimmer etc).   Perhaps even our lawn mower (I'll have to check the power rating).

I found this also in case you don't want to change the plug on a US power strip:
