I am a first time user.  My wife and I are planning to move back to England and we are just wanting to get some news from there. My wife is a British citizen and I am retired US Air Force. I was stationed in England for eight years and loved the place. That's where we met and got married. We have not decided exactly where we want to go but are looking around. We currently live in Florida.

Welcome! Just be prepared for the aghast looks when you mention Florida and everyone wants to know why you'd ever leave! :)

That is so true.  I'm from California and more than 50% of the time when I tell people where I'm from they reply, "so WHY did you move here?"  Funny.

People ask me why I left Ohio, though they know nothing of Ohio :) I'm like, well, Ohio isn't really known for being a particularly exciting place lol

Hi Corinthians,

What kind of 'news' about the UK are you after?!

As you are at the 'thinking about moving to the UK phase' then I'll hazard a guess you'll be looking at many aspects that everyone moving here will think about. I'd daresay the top of that list will be the financials aspect i.e where you can afford to move to and keep as much of the lifestyle you'd like in place as well.

There'll be many examples on this forum of those who've moved to all areas of the UK and how they've found it and how things have gone a few months or even years later. Overall, the UK has a higher cost of living, lower standard of living, lower quality of life when you take into account the various indices used to rate many countries around the world and especially the G8/G20 countries, which provide more of a 'similar' comparison. This is also true when a direct comparison is done with the USA as well.

As you say you are a retiree, then perhaps you'll be looking to the south coast of the UK which has the 'best' chance of moderate weather? or do you not mind the colder weather the further north of the UK you go?

In short, you'll need to evaluate and calculate your personal situation with your wife as to your financials and then look to various areas of the UK which better match what you are realistically likely to afford for the level of living you'd like. There's quite a few threads like this on this forum where specific information as well as an overview can be found, so do search and read up on those.

If you can provide more information here as well, then I'm sure you'll get more feedback and responses too.

Cheers, DtM! West London & Slough UK!

It did do that! The only person who has known Ohio when I mentioned it must have been very interested in politics, because he said, 'Oh you're a swing state!' which was very surprising :)

'Oh you're a swing state!'

You will run into people who know a heck of a lot more than you think. I was lectured to in a cafe once about Tammany Hall. This person must have written her thesis on it or something...I mean I've seen Gangs of New York, but I just had to sit back and listen. I wasn't even in the game.

But yes, my two go to Ohio quips are the river catching fire and Klinger. Maybe Dutch Elm Disease or Joe Walsh in a pinch.

Hey, you just tell them that there was a war fought over Toledo!  A pig was killed, and Michigan got the UP in exchange for giving the city to Ohio.

Or, you know, go with the Animaniacs quote:
"All is strange and vague.  Are we dead, or is this Ohio?".

I am learning so much about Ohio that I didn't know, despite living there for 30  years!
