Queen Mary 2 and pets
« on: September 11, 2015, 12:53:50 AM »
Has anyone with pets ever taken the Queen Mary 2 to get to England?? I would love to take the cruise over, but am not so sure how my two dogs would handle the trip. Anyone have any experience with this??
Thanks!

Haven't done it yet but that is precisely what we are going to do on November 25th with our two dogs.  I feel, for me and my dogs, it's a much better choice than flying.  In fact we have been wanting to move to the UK for a long time but just refused to fly our dogs. When we found out the Queen Mary was sailing with pets, we were all over it.  We had to book our passage a year in advance though.  They are supposdely upgrading to double the number of kennels but for now they have 8.

Neat! Please let me know how it goes!! I'm not looking forward to moving mine, by sea or air, but leaving them behind is not an option. I'm just looking for the least traumatic route...for all of us! Best of luck on your journey!

I moved mine via air (cats) and all was well.  I honestly think it's harder on us than the animals.

I'm sure there is some truth to that, KFdancer. And it probably doesn't help that I absolutely hate flying.

We crossed from UK to US a while back on the QEII.  Two kids but no pets.  But we did visit the kennel area and were delighted to see the dogs and cats.  Looked like very posh conditions for them.  If I were to bring my cat back to the UK I would definitely consider it (I hate flying too!)

BTW, the North Atlantic in winter can be very rough.  I'm a good sailor but the rest of my family wasn't  ::)  I imagine stabilizers have improved since then though.

Thanks! I'm waiting on my visa right now and hoping they get the timing right (and that of course I am granted the Visa) and I'll let you know.  I have been assured that they are treated just as well as we can expect to be treated.  We can spend as much time with them as we like and can walk them ourselves. I know they will not like be separated from us at night time , as they have to stay in the kennel , and will be confused at first but I think they will adjust.  Both my boys are rescues and have some issues so while that is a risk, flying would be much harder on them.

Thanks for bringing this up. If we make the move, I'll be bringing four cats, two of which are 14 and 10. I was worried about the stress on the older ones, not to mention the cost. Out of curiosity, do you know what the charge is for pets on the QMII? I'm kind of excited about this. I've always wanted to do a transatlantic sailing. It appeals to my vintage side. :-)

it's $500 per animal for the crate. At the moment they only have 8 spots so it books at least a year in advance.  It took us 18 months to get a spot.

Yikes! I guess that torpedoes the idea for me since I have 4 cats. :-(

I've about determined that it would best to fly non-stop to Paris. It's $200 per pet on Air France, and they fly non-stop out of Atlanta, which is only 3 hours from me.

We looked into the Queen Mary and the kennel was fully booked at least a year in advance.  We ended up flying our 3 cats over on the same flight we were on with Virgin Atlantic.

The process is lengthy, complicated and insanely expensive but just like you, leaving our cats behind was not an option.

We were very happy with the service we received from Virgin Atlantic.  I would highly recommend them.

I can't recall when you said your plans were to go but if you have a while I'd still contact the QM II.  It maybe be less expensive for cats as they are smaller and they may allow them to share a kennel.  Not sure, just a thought

Just one point of advice for anyone considering transporting their pets by air, please make sure you have chosen the most direct flights you can possibly find. My 2 Golden Retrievers moved from Virginia to Scotland and it was a lengthy process involving road transport and 3 flights. One of my boys took it really badly and was very sick when he arrived in Scotland. He is noise sensitive anyway and I knew it would be hard on him but so many take-offs and landings was too much. That's all........just be aware.
