American in Belfast
« on: August 03, 2016, 05:24:38 PM »
Hi. My name is Tammy. I am currently living in Belfast trying to find out information about working and living in Northern Ireland. There is not much information in the way of sponsored work for Tier 2 Visas. I would love to hear from anyone who has been successful in finding permanent work and is living here. My husband is in IT and will be able to find work, but wishes to work another year before moving. I have previously been a P5 (3rd grade) teacher in Florida, but I am open to any type of employment. I would be delighted to meet anyone who is in the Belfast area and wishes to sit and chat.

Hi Tammy!

I'll leave the Tier 2 talk to those who know more about it but just wanted to say hi and welcome you to the forum.  :)

How are you enjoying your visit so far?

I absolutely love it. I came over on holiday last year and it felt like home. So I'm back until December with the hopes of finding a sponsored job so that I can stay. Thank you so much for your kind welcome!

That's great! Glad you're having fun!  :)

Because not everyone checks in here, in the welcome wagon, feel free to post again in the visa section.

Hi Tammy! I am a teacher over in England. In order to get a Tier 2, the sponsor will have to prove that there is no one else in the UK who can do the job (basically no one qualified applied other than you).

It is *possible* to do so as a primary teacher, but not common. Also, most schools recruit for the following year Jan - May. But you might luck out and find someone who leaves within the first few weeks (because teaching is not in a great state in the UK, though I don't know more specifics on the ins and outs of N Ireland schools and education. If a teacher leaves in the first few weeks, they would need to fill the role very quickly, which might make a Tier 2 applicant unattractive, as the process takes time.

Once you *did* find a sponsor and pass the Resident Labour Market Test, the school would have to apply for a restricted Certificate of sponsorship. The committee that grants the rCoS meets only once a month (the 11th) and they issue the rCoS according to quota. Once that is issued, you could apply for a Tier 2 from the US (not from within the UK).

You are fighting an uphill battle, but not a truly impossible one!
