Any Tips for UK citizens moving to USA?
« on: January 19, 2016, 08:41:36 PM »
Has anyone moved back to the US with a UK citizen and have any tips for non-obvious things? We know we need to rent out flat, close utilities, forward mail, inform HMRC. If you moved to the U.S., did you wish you'd done something before you left, for example?

We won't be moving any furniture or appliances - only clothes and personal effects.

Thanks!

We did this back on 1996, and will be doing it again in the summer. I can't think of anything I didn't do back then that came back to haunt me! We will keep a residence and car in the UK so our needs may be slightly different. Definitely keep a bank account though!

I kept my HSBC bank account open when I left the UK in 2004. My MIL puts money in it for my children's birthday and Christmas money and I withdraw it for a $3 charge from Bank of America ATM. I'll be moving back to the UK in 2019 so at least I'll have a bank when I get there again. Apart from that, I can't think of anything else that needed to be done that I forgot or wish I had done.
