Moving two very small (5lb) dogs from the US to the UK
« on: January 12, 2016, 08:32:34 PM »
Where can i go to get a summary of the main steps/requirements etc for this? We are looking to move to the UK early 2017, and have two 9 year old, very small dogs.

Thanks

I went through this.  You can do all of your quarantine in the U.S. without having to house your pets in a quarantine location.  That means they stay with you at home while you go through the process (approximately 6months).

Do your research on airline shipping.  At the time the best out there were Continental and they knew how to work with us on the shipping part.  The rest is up to you to manage between yourself, the U.K., the USDA and your vet.

How long ago did you go through the process?

Because the 6-month quarantine for pets in the US was abolished on 1st January 2012 when the US was included in the Pets Travel Scheme (PETS).

So, now the process only only takes about 3 weeks or so (since they need to be microchipped and vaccinated against rabies at least 21 days before travel). So if the OP is travelling to the UK in early 2017, they don't need to start the process for moving their pet until maybe a month before they move.

(And actually, since 29th Dec 2014, pets in unlisted countries that do require a quarantine period now only have to wait 4 months, not 6 months)

See here for information about the PETS process:

I used a pet relocation company when I moved to the UK as it was under the old scheme which was a bit more compelx (and I was a corporate relo, so I didn't have to pay).  Be prepared for sticker shock as over 5 years ago it was $3300 to move two cats (comparable size to your dogs I would imagine).
