Passport with a chip????
« on: January 22, 2016, 12:23:00 PM »
I was just on the Virgin Atlantic website and they said that as of April, anyone traveling to the US would have to have a passport with a chip. Does anyone know WHERE/HOW to get this? Would my (Brit) husband have to apply for a new passport?? I'm assuming my US passport would not be affected, but.....

Don't fret -- all UK passports have had chips since 2006, to comply with the US Visa Waiver Programme. https://www.gov.uk/government/news/new-uk-passport-unveiled

The airline is probably saying that now because the last non-chipped passports are set to expire soon (when the U.S. started requiring passports to have chips for the VWP in 2006 already-issued passports without chips were "grandfathered" in, but now the last of them will expire soon meaning all passports valid for the VWP will soon have chips).

Another effect of chips in passports is that for example when you change your name you have to obtain a whole new passport rather than have the old name stamped over (since your name and other relevant biographical information is hard-coded into the chip and cannot be changed without completely replacing it).

Thanks for the replies. I just looked at my husband's passport and it does have the e-passport symbol on the front, so I hope that's good. I don't SEE a chip but maybe it's there under the plastic. Anyway, I feel (slightly) better now.
