Insurance with US license
« on: January 11, 2016, 12:13:50 AM »
Hello,

Does anyone have recommendations for insurance with a US drivers license?  Will be leasing a car and wondering about the logistics of insurance.  How much would it be (roughly)...

Thanks,
Tom

Hi,

It's not possible to give you a ball park figure as insurance rates/premiums vary alot depending on many criteria. Check the fine print of the lease, it may require you to hold a UK license, so talk to the broker/dealer about this. If it's possible to lease on a US license here, then you'll need to look for insurance companies willing to insure you without a UK drivers licence. Premiums will be more expensive in this case and depending on the type of car you are leasing too - for instance will you be leasing an entry level car? a medium type and brand ? a prestige brand? an executive car? a sports car or a Super Car? your UK address/postcode, your profession and age will all make a difference.

How long is the lease? if more than a year, keep in mind you have to obtain your UK license after 12 months of being/living in the UK i.e, you can't use your US license for more than 12 months after arriving here. There's many topics about this in this section here.

Cheers, DtM! West London & Slough UK!

Will your company be leasing the car for you?  Or do you already have UK credit?

Thanks for the responses.  The company will provide the credit warranty (that's what they tell me).  But I need to find the insurance.
Can folks provide what insurances they used when they first arrives with US DLs please?

Thanks,
Tom

I've been with Admiral since I arrived, as they were the best rate for my car at the time (Nissan 350z, so rather powerful for a "new" driver).  I went about 8 months without a car here though and had my UK provisional license when I obtained insurance.

I've heard if you have a military link, USAA is good.  Also Geico I believe.

LV would insure me on my US DL on my father's policy for short periods of time when I was visiting the UK. Perhaps you could try asking them?

Hubby and I just got covered today through Adrian Flux with our US Licenses for a year for around 900 pounds a year (sorry on a US keyboard) ;)
We bought a 2005 Peugot 407 Zenith SW Estate. This is with one claim for me in the last year, but we can pay monthly which is great for us.
I am a North Carolina girl born and raised, yes I love sweet iced tea, Texas Pete and biscuits and gravy....but England is where my soul feels at peace and I can't wait to get there.
