US Soc. Sec and UK equivalent
« on: February 25, 2016, 03:26:04 AM »
My wife is a dual US/UK citizen and we are trying to make the jump to UK. We have a couple of questions about US Social Security and UK.

1 We are both middle age now and have been accruing SS for 20 and 25 years respectively.  If we move to the UK and retire 15 or so years from now will we still get the US Social Security we have a accrued?

2 Does the UK have something equivalent to US social security and if so how does one pay into it? Is it also subtracted from ones paycheck?

Thanks in advance. So much to think about....

Assuming nothing changes the SSA will pay you your SS in the UK. It will not be taxed by the US, but will be fully taxable in the UK.

The UK equivalent of SS is the "UK state pension". It is funded through payroll deductions called "National Insurance Contributions".
