Bank Interest £
« on: February 26, 2016, 01:22:31 PM »
I think all I need to do to finish my taxes is to figure out how much interest I got on my bank account through Lloyds. How? The statements online don't mention interest....I "think" the savings account we have only puts the interest on at the end of the year in April. So......I just don't put anything on for this years US tax and wait until next year to see what we get?

When did you open the account? If the interest is paid annually, it may be deposited to your account on the anniversary of the account opening although it could be at tax year end.

Call the bank to be sure but if you haven't been credited with the interest in 2015 at all, (which assumes you opened it sometime in 2015) then it'll go in next years return.

If you are not signed up for telephone banking yet, it might be easier just to pop into a branch.

There is nothing online as far as interest goes, just deposits and withdrawals.  My wife tells me (because I never remember) that it was yearly. That would come up in April for a full year. I sure wouldn't be able to figure it out on my own anyway. We have had up to £280K in the account (for a month or so) and down as far as £23K or so.

I'd ask Lloyds to figure it out for you.

That's what I thought about doing.....but then I looked at it from the point that I actually haven't received any interest yet so there shouldn't be any money to pay taxes on until they pay us in April.....In which case it would go on 2016 taxes. I may still panic and go talk to them next week.

If there are no interest payments on your statements or on your online transactions that you can see then you may not be getting interest.  I have an HSBC checking account and a savings account that I use online.  The checking account is a no interest account, something I chose to avoid fees and/or having a minimum balance to maintain.  The savings account shows the interest paid each month.  Both of my accounts have statements that I can view and download as a pdf (monthly statements for the checking account, quarterly for the savings).

If you don't see any interest payments in the transactions list online and Lloyds don't provide bank statements, then I would assume £0.0 as interest.

ETA
A quick online and you may have the Lloyds Classic checking account which has no Fees or minimum balances and no interest

One account we had formerly paid interest annually. I declared it on our 1040 in the calendar year it was received.

The same account now pays interest monthly, so I will declare the interest actually earned/paid in 2015 on my return.
