Hi everyone
« on: March 18, 2016, 02:05:16 PM »
Hi! I just signed up and looking forward to chatting with all of you. I'm an import from Washington, in my 30s, now living in Wales because the UK visa process was more achievable than the US visa process. I've been in the UK for just over a year now. I'm an anthropology student, and I'm tickled by all the castles and old settlements to look at. I also knit and do crochet work, so living in Sheep Country is great for that. It took me six months to figure out that frozen pie crusts are called shortcrust pastry here and get used to having to turn on outlets and the fact some light switches are on the outside of the rooms. I found this forum while I was looking for an alternative name for provolone cheese and dismayingly discovered it's just not sold here much, like root beer. I really miss my root beer and breakfast sausage.

Hiya and welcome. :)

I've been here the better part of 6 years now, in Yorkshire (from the Philly suburbs). I'm just learning how to crochet (something I've always wanted to do), but, sadly, I am terrible at it! I am so jealous of people for whom knitting and crocheting are second nature.

I've never seen Provolone cheese here either, and I miss it as well (along with several other things).

Glad you found us! :)

Hello,  there was a post on here a while back about root beer being forbidden because of banned ingredients.  It still seems to be available in my local Tesco.

Can you remind me what's special about provolone?  I'd guess it's a mild tasting, plasticy  cheese that comes in a log.  If that's right, how about Gouda?

Oh yeah, I made some sausage biscuits a while back and used that funny flat square sausage meat they sell.  With some extra pepper, it seemed close to breakfast sausage.

Hello from a fellow Washingtonian (state, that is... not DC)!

I was going to suggest gouda, too (although I disagree with the plasticy comment). ;) It's not the same, but it has a similar mild taste to provolone. Edam is also pretty tasty and worth a try.

I had a burger at a pub last week and one of the cheese choices was Monterey jack.  I was one happy girl!

Hey Jimbocz,

The EU no longer allows the import of anything with a certain amount of sodium benzoate or above to be imported anymore... So no more A&W, no more Barq's , no more well, a lot of things.

http://blog.americansoda.co.uk/2015/04/sad-day-aw-root-beer-discontinued/

I chatted with some really nice people at the American kiosk in our local mall, Intu Derby, and they said you will still be able to get Dad's rootbeer here in the UK, but it's the EU version of it not the US. The people said it tastes fruity and that just sounds weird for rootbeer...

And I miss muenster cheese. Oh, so nice with a pepper turkey breast on a nice wheat bread. Damn and I hungry!

And I miss muenster cheese.

Have you tried Port Salut?  It comes in a wedge, and can also be found in slices in some shops.  To me, it is just like the muenster cheese I used to eat back in California.  Even has that horrible orange rind-thing on it.

Hi! Thanks! And keep at it, crochet's actually a lot easier than knitting or tatting and the things like that. I like edam fine, but provolone sandwiches... sigh!

Hi! Thanks! I heard that it was sodium benzoate being required to be under a certain limit. I'm seriously thinking on making my own root beer. The stuff they sell at Tesco is okay, but Boylan's isn't as kicky as a good old A&W. The only other one they sell is Bunderberg's from Australia and is the worst root beer.

Well, you may be thinking of Kraft singles, but provolone's a mild softer cheese. I'm not a big fan of Gouda though   :-[ . Not sure what the square sausage is. British sausage is so weird though, they call just plain ground pork sausage meat, nothing done to it and in the US it's not sausage until it's spiced. I'm betting the difference is all the German influence in American foods, I heard somewhere that American sausage is bratwurst over here.

Hello from a fellow Washingtonian (state, that is... not DC)!

Thanks! Ah! Someone who knows my state/dc pain. Isn't it just annoying when DC's the assumed default? I'm from Clark County, myself. And it is! I'm using edam to replace the provolone in my cheese steak sandwich.

I had a burger at a pub last week and one of the cheese choices was Monterey jack.  I was one happy girl!

That's awesome! I've had no trouble finding Monterey in stores but restaurants are a bit more tricky, even the "American food" ones like TGIF. My husband's taken to it as a mozzarella substitute. And speaking of TGIF, I ordered guacamole there and got some sort of strange but tasty chopped avacado salad with tomato, def not guacamole though.

Well, that stinks they've limited sodium benzoate. Although I have to say I've found both A&W and Barq's on United Candy of America still being sold. They might have checked into the sodium benzoate level, but they're def still selling it. Dad's Rootbeer isn't the greatest kind in the first place, though...

Have you tried Port Salut?

Port Salut is my husband's favorite cheese, though I've never tried muenster before, but I'll keep that in mind for a replacement if a recipe calls for it!

Thanks everyone!

Ah, I wonder if it's regional? I haven't seen any root beer in Asda yet, though they do have an okay type of cream soda.

It even has sodium benzoate in it! But I bet the put a smaller amount in since it's made here in the UK. I'll have to check out our nearest store and see if they have it. I'd like a rootbeer every now and then.

I like the idea of home made root beer.  Last time I was in the states, we went to a micro brewery that made it's own root beer.  If you've got a recipe, post it please.
