Driving license and passport expiration
« on: March 20, 2016, 11:32:14 PM »
Hi!

I'll be applying for the spouse settlement visa next week (expediting it) and moving hopefully in May to be with my UKC husband!

2 questions:

- do I need to do anything before moving about getting a drivers license or just worry about that when I'm there? what's the procedure either way?

- my husbands passport expires in June and he is coming to the US in May. He's heard they're sometimes funny about it at customs but my thought is that as long as the travel is before the expiration it's ok. Is this correct or should he renew?

You can't do anything about getting a UK licence until you are there because you'll need to send off your passport and visa to the DVLA when you apply for your provisional UK licence... So you just need to wait until you have moved to start the process.

Once you have sent off for and received a provisional licence, you'll need to go through all the UK driving tests - theory and practical- to get a full licence. It's a good idea to take some driving lessons too, to learn how to pass the test.

You'll have to check the US Embassy website to see whether he needs to have a particular amount of time left on his passport to travel to the US (some countries require 6 months left on the passport). However if it expires in June anyway, he might as well renew now, before the summer rush, since you can apply to renew a UK passport a few months before it expires anyway.

As long as he leaves before the passport expiry date, he's fine.

https://uk.usembassy.gov/visas/non-immigrant-visa-faqs/passport-and-travel-documents/

But as ksand says, just have him renew it now.  They add in the remaining time on the passport and then he doesn't have to stress or (potentially) wait ages for it during the summer rush.

I thought that many airlines also had a policy that the passport must be valid for 6 months after travel as well? I've heard of people being denied boarding for that. Might want to check with the airline.

If they tried that, I would ask them to pull up the US embassy website and show them the actual policy.
