Marriage Tax allowance eligibility
« on: April 11, 2016, 05:26:35 PM »
Hello!

As I am not working right now, I think we would benefit from the marriage tax allowance, however, I'm not working because I am not allowed to at the moment while I wait for my FLR(M) to come through.

Is my husband still eligible for this tax allowance, even though I am not working because I am not allowed to? Should we wait until I can get a job before enquiring about this allowance?

I think you need to be eligible to work. So if you came here on a fiance visa and are awaiting your Flr m, you have to wait. They ask you for your national insurance number and more than likely, you still have to phone to complete the application as I doubt you will have an account that pays interest...they asked my husband this question online. But, they do back date it. We did ours on 1st April and it was back dated to the beginning of the last tax year....still waiting to see if it is credited all at once.

That makes sense, thanks Jenny! I already have a national insurance number since I worked as a student so one less step to do when I'm finally eligible to work. Thanks again!
