KFDancer they sound like my in-laws. They're very traditional in that they assume the husband is the breadwinner. Most of the wives/mothers they know don't work. I think they make a lot of assumptions based on my fiance's salary (which, oddly, is still higher than theirs) about what our financial situation is. There have been a lot of comments about how everyone will have lower expectations for our wedding because they know we can't afford something as nice as BIL's wedding, her parents paid for the wedding and they know mine won't be able to shoulder that same financial burden, we shouldn't feel bad, etc. Meanwhile, my salary is almost double my fiance's, and my parents, who are generously paying for a lot of the wedding costs, were able to retire at 50. They're just super frugal so you would never know it by looking at them. Not that they've even met my parents or have any idea what any of us do for a living. Who says things like that anyway? I thought talking about money was even more taboo in the UK, but it seems to come up nonstop in their family.

Luckily for me, it's just my sister-in-law who is my husband's brother's wife.  They don't live in the UK.  They are not traditional.  She works and my BIL is a stay at home dad (fully respect that).  She just has a way with words.  She's nice, just not personable.
