weekend getaway ideas please!!

My folks are coming to visit at the end of the month and they've graciously volunteered to watch our toddler if my husband and I want to take a weekend away. So I'm looking for somewhere to go! Ideally it would:
-be within 3 hours of Newcastle, by rail
-have access to country walks from town (we won't have a car)
-have good places to eat/drink (I'm pregnant but my husband LOVES whisky and craft beer)
-have things to do if the weather's bad

Any suggestions? Thanks!!

How about Pitlochry?

I've not been there much as an adult but I remember the walks being spectacular.

There's a distillery listed at no 2 of the top things to do!

I had a quick look at the trains, seems to be more like 3 and a half to 4 hours from you and I honestly don't remember how close in everything is but it'd be worth taking a look.

York!

Not really 'country' walks, but many walks about the city (the Wall, etc). There's the river walk through lots of parks, etc...

Jillions of pubs and AMAZING eateries - literally foodie paradise.

The Minster, Museums, shopping, and um, eating!

Physics teacher... guilty. Though probably going to get out of that gig and back into engineering... eventually.

That's so funny, my husband started out as an engineer as well! Though I guess it's probably not all *that* uncommon. I'm a policy wonk (or was before we moved here) so it's mostly over my head.
