Previously held UK license
« on: June 21, 2016, 06:47:49 PM »
I was curious if anyone had previously had an UK DL, moved back to the US and then ended up going back to the UK?
I'm a USC and wife is UKC. I lived in UK for 16 years, took test had had my 'paper' license which I kept with my after moving back to US in '99. I am in the midst of applying for a spousal visa and making preparation to hopefully move to UK in September.
As I been going thru my stuff, I realized I have lost my paper license.
I am assuming I will be able to merely apply for a replacement license when I get there (although it will be the card type).
Has anybody been in a similar situation?
best regards,

Me! Do you have your license number and NI number? These will be requested, along with your last address in the UK so that DVLA can search for your license. If you don't have your license number they should be able to search with NI number and address.

Been there, done that. DVLA can retrieve your license number via your former address. Not a problem at all.

I moved back after 10 years in the US; got a photo, filled in the form, and had my new UK license within a week. You will also need to send a 'valid identity document' - e.g., a UK passport (if you have one) or your US passport or BRP if you don't.

Married December 1992 (my 'old flame' whom I first met in the mid-70s)
1st move to UK - 1993 (Letter of Consent granted at British Embassy in Washington DC)
ILR - 1994 (1 year later - no fee way back then!)
Back to US in 2000
Returned to UK July 2011 (Spousal Visa/KOL endorsement)
ILR - September 2011
Application for naturalization submitted July 2014
Approval received 15-10-14; ceremony scheduled for 10 November!
Passport arrived 25 November 2014. Finally done!

As I said, it should be possible to search with NI number and address, and Vadio managed to do it.

I found the DVLA to be most helpful when I phoned them, sometimes it helps to speak to a human rather than struggling with forms that don't fit your situation.

thank you, Fruitgum and vaio! I was thinking that it wouldn't be such a big thing, however, your comments have confirmed it.
thanks again for sharing,
