Finding a Job proving very Difficult!!!
« on: November 17, 2004, 04:54:34 PM »
Hey folks just wanted some advice from people who are either in the same boat as me or have been successful in relocating from the US to the UK.  I am extremely eager to move to London and want to work there as soon as possible.  However, getting a work permit is not easy.  I have heard that there is a severe shortage of hospitality personnel and maybe i can get a WP easy that way.

What do u think is my best course of action?  Should I just book a flight there for like 3 weeks (i could stay w/ friends there) and just look for work.  If and when someone is willing to hire me, I could simply return home and travel back?  Good idea or not?  Looking for work online is tough!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks

Jeff

It is illegal to look for work in the UK without the proper visa.

I realise that it's technically illegal to "look" for work but I've read in other forums and sites that if you just tell customs that you're only on vacation, it won't be a problem.  I mean, I can't help it if an employer "decides" to hire me while I'm there, then return to the U.S. so they can apply for a work permit.  I hope that this doesnt come off as being nieve but it is very hard to find work on the web.  Think about it..if you owned a business would you hire someone just based on a piece of paper.

Actually, if you "just tell customs that you're only on vacation"-aside from it being irrelavent to Customs, since it is Immigration you'e concerned with-it's a serious LIE that could get you deported.  When that work permit is applied for, they will want to know when and how you came to be hired.  If you lied to Immigration and claimed to only be on vacation, and they find out you applied for a job in that time, your visa could very well be denied along with your rights to visit the UK in future on the visa waiver program.

Lying to Immigration is never a good idea-we have had numerous people here who can attest to that.

Once you have a job interview lined up, you can enter the UK for that and be honest and tell them that's why you're there.
As far as "think about it...would I want to hire someone just based on a piece of paper"...well, no.  But I would interview someone based on a piece of paper, as that is what employers do every day.  What I would not do is hire someone looking for work illegally after lying to the goverment.  Not the sort I would want working for me, I'm afraid.

I hope you get some interviews that you can come over for, though, and wish you luck.

I couldn't say it any better than this. If you were to get caught out you could jeopardise entry into the UK. With or without a work permit. Please please please, do not lie to Passport Control and do not look for work without the proper visas. You're only putting yourself up for a nasty fall.

If you're a recent graduate you could look into whether you can come on the BUNAC programme, that would give you a 6 month work visa.

I appreciate all the feedback guys.  Sorry if I came off being nieve, it's just that I get so many conflicting ideas about what to do.  I believe that a job in a restaurant/hotel might be the easiest route to getting a work permit, but I'm not sure which hotels might be involved with the sectors based scheme.   I would like to start work in Jan/Feb 2005 but now I'm thinking that might not be possible.  Hopefully the numerous emails/CVs I've sent out recently will have one employer willing to sponsor me.

http://www.caterer.com/ is a good resource. When I was looking for work I briefly considered that industry as I had a bit of hotel and events experience in my background and found this site to be helpful....

But I have to agree with everyone here - you should do everything as above board as possible if you care about your ability to visit or live in the UK in the future.... It's just not worth the risk....
