Moving furniture to UK - is it worth it?
« on: August 12, 2016, 03:41:48 PM »
Hi,

First a simple question.... is it worth moving IKEA furniture from Scandinavia to the UK?

We're trying to compare cost to move furniture vs. buying furniture in the UK, and we don't know if the price/quality of the furniture in the UK are as good or better? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Ikea furniture is the same from country to country.  All depends on how much you have, what you would get for it if you sold it and bought new, versus cost to ship.

Another aspect to consider, is the volume of personal items that you would likely be shipping. If you have a ton of clothes, bedding, books, personal effects - more than you could shove into a car - then the shipping option becomes more attractive.

Based on my experience, no matter how new, how nice, and how much you paid, when you sell  furniture it's almost like giving it away. If you like your stuff, and the cost is not prohibitive, I would ship. Been there, done that multiple times (US-UK-US-UK and UK-Portugal-UK).
Married December 1992 (my 'old flame' whom I first met in the mid-70s)
1st move to UK - 1993 (Letter of Consent granted at British Embassy in Washington DC)
ILR - 1994 (1 year later - no fee way back then!)
Back to US in 2000
Returned to UK July 2011 (Spousal Visa/KOL endorsement)
ILR - September 2011
Application for naturalization submitted July 2014
Approval received 15-10-14; ceremony scheduled for 10 November!
Passport arrived 25 November 2014. Finally done!

We've moved a few times too, its swings and roundabouts. I wouldn't pay to ship my furniture myself, other than a few sentimental items, its all replaceable. Plus UK house room sizes tend to be smaller than the US and you might have problems actually getting your stuff into the house. That US king sized bed isn't going to fit in many UK bedrooms. But it the company is paying I'd move it and see what you can actually use when you land.

Otherwise use Gumtree, Shpock and charity shops to buy second hand furniture - you'll find good quality furniture at very low prices. Look there for IKEA furniture before paying full price.
