skiing

My current guy wants to take me skiing in February (yes, I know, planning WAY ahead for such a new thing but it's kinda been a whirlwind sorta thing)...and I have no clue as to where to go.  He has a few ideas but I thought I'd ask y'all about ideas!  And if you know of a great place to stay & eat while at whatever resort we choose, that would be great to know!

We really enjoyed Zell am See in Austria - a memorable resort not far from Salzburg, where the slopes come down to the old town that's set beside the lake.  We had Dinner, Bed and Breakfast at a hotel there over Christmas a few years back, and it was a magical time. There are some beginner slopes and a good range of intermediates too.

Interestingly, we were looking to book (late) for the February half term a couple of years ago and were thinking "Austria" again.  Turned out that for an extra 20 pound each we could get to Mammoth Lakes, California.  Now if you're learning, THAT's the place to go.

Really - have a look at the brochures, compare resorts.  France tends to be "plastic" resorts, Switzerland expensive.  I've heard great things about former Eastern European skiing, but that some of the lifts / equipment are a bit old.  Things to take note of - (a) is it easy to get from the accommodation to the skiing (b) are you sure there will be snow.

The best thing to do is walk into a travel shop and grab as many brochures as possible. February is half term for UK schools so prices tend to be quite expensive. If you have no children I would suggest trying to go at the end of Jan or early March. Im taking the family skiing this Feb to the Czech republic.I just booked yesterday. Booking now for February is not getting ahead of your self because most people book way in advance.

Graham is right,it is cheaper to fly to the states and ski for a week in Feb than it is to ski in Europe.

Good luck

Wish I could choose when to go...but I work as a school teacher so I only have certain times off.  I will mention going to the States in Feb to the man.  Thanks to you both!
