What Happens When You Have a Kid? (Citizenship wise)
« on: January 03, 2017, 12:02:49 PM »
Hi everyone.

My wife and I are currently going through the mid-point of our settlement visa (FLR(M)) and she is pregnant :).

Just curious as to what happens when we have a child so I have a few questions!

1) Is our child instantly British and American?
2) How do we get the child an American passport if the above question is true?
3) Do they get a SSN?
4) Does this child then become an applicant in the ILR application although it was born on British soil?

Many thanks!

1) Yes, the child will have both UK and US citizenship from birth. They will be entitled to both UK and US passports.

2) You make an appointment with the US Embassy in London/Edinburgh/Belfast to register their birth abroad and to apply for a SSN and a US passport for them. See: https://uk.usembassy.gov/u-s-citizen-services/birth/

3) Yes, you can apply for a SSN for them when you apply for a US passport for them (which can be done when you register their birth with the US Embassy)

4) The child will be a UK citizen, therefore will not need a visa to live in the UK. You will need to mention that you have a British child on the ILR application form, but they will not need a visa and will not be considered for the income requirements.

Perfectly answered. Thank you ksand. Quite jealous of our future kid to be honest, having the option to live in either country growing up!
