Delivery of passport with visa, must you sign for it?

Random question but just trying to plan for next few days.

I have been following the 2017 timeline and it appears, hopefully, that I willl receive a decision email very soon. When they mail back my passport, do I have to sign for it? The problem is that today I am going out of town for the next week.

If need be I will return. It's a long drive but doable. But I could also have a friend pick up our mail. We live in a rural area, so I'm not worried about someone stealing anything from our front porch.

What has everyone's experiences been?

You are supposed to have to sign for it when it is delivered, though some people have said their visa was delivered without anyone asking for a signature.

They just left mine on the porch.  (My mom had taken the day off of work, and we are in a neighborhood where we would worry about mail theft, so we were pretty ticked off.)  So I think it just depends on the UPS delivery person.  Do you have the tracking number?  I think you might be able to go and change delivery preferences after one attempt at delivering it.  So if they try, you can perhaps ask them to leave it with a neighbor, or hold it at the UPS facility until you get back so you can go pick it up.  I'm not sure how easy that is for you, but it was something I was considering before when I wasn't sure someone would be home the day it arrived.

I guess we both got lucky that nothing happened to it. I don't know what I would have done if it went missing. (I mean, start over, but I wouldn't have even known the decision.)
