Flight question
« on: December 16, 2016, 07:14:44 PM »
I'm visiting my family in the US for the holidays. On my return flight to the UK, I land in Manchester first for an hour and a half hour layover, then fly to London Heathrow (I know it's an odd one, but it was the cheapest I found). Will I go through immigration in Manchester or London? Also, will I need to recheck my bags once I get to Manchester?

You'll clear immigration in Manchester.  I highly doubt you'll have to recheck your bags but not 100% sure on that one.  I'm sure someone else will know.

I think you will have to recheck your bags, as you have to go through customs at the same time that you go through immigration.

You go through immigration at the first point of entry but your bags should be checked through to your final destination and you'll go through customs there.  (Unless you booked the flights separately in which case, you would have to re-check your bags.

This was from a couple months ago. I went through immigration in Manchester, didn't have to recheck bags, and had to go through security again to get to my gate for my flight to Heathrow. Worked out fine- FYI for anyone who's going on a similar flight.

MAN is infinitely preferable for immigration and security -- LHR is a nightmare.  Wouldn't the checked baggage issue depend upon the airline(s)?

Really? I've only ever flown into the UK in LHR and it was comparable to flying to the US through Dallas/Fort Worth.

The usual. American girl meets British guy. They fall into like, then into love. Then there was the big decision. The American traveled across the pond to join the Brit. And life was never the same again.

I live in Texas and I simply hate going through my home airport, IAH, and DFW. I will pay the extra money to go to the UK through Austin. BA flies non-stop.

MAN is the airport where my family is so I always go through there when I need to visit them. It's much more quiet and smooth sailing. I have to fly through Atlanta to get there but Atlanta has become better over the years.

Getting to LHR is a big deal for us as we have to take the train to KingsX, stay overnight in a hotel, take the tube to LHR (one hour)  Alternatively we could fly to LHR on a BA connector which can be a pain if you have to collect your luggage and change terminals (from 5 to 3)  And vice versa.

I once flew from BOS to LHR on Virgin with a connecting flight on their Little Red to MAN (no longer available) but we were late taking off because of snow (!) and de-icing problems.  So missed the connection. Raced to Virgin's help desk hoping to get the next flight to MAN but Virgin insisted they put me on a BA flight to LBA.  So I had to change terminals, go through security again (and got only a measly snack voucher!)  All of this at what felt like the middle of the night to me.
