Flying a shitzu mix to America
« on: October 25, 2016, 08:27:24 PM »
Hi everyone.
My husband and I are currently looking at dogs. I was reading that shitzus are banned from flying? I don't want to buy one and if we ever do move to America someday, and have our puppy banned from moving with us..

Does anyone have a shitzu and experience with flying with them?

Thanks

If I read this link correctly United will fly Shitzu's: http://www.pettravel.com/airline_pet_rules/continental.cfm

I hope this helps  :)

We had a member bring her Persian cat over a few years ago.  She had to have kitty in the cabin (no airline would take kitty in the hold), so she had to fly to Paris and make her way to the UK from there.  So there are options!  But there will be fewer options.

I'd say that as flying the dog may be a consideration in the future, it's probably best to stay away from any of the brachycephalic (snub-nosed) breeds to begin with.

It is always going to further complicate an already complicated process and you never know how rules on flying them will change in the future.

There are loads of other wonderful breeds to choose from which don't have this issue.  :)

I think this is good advice.  Have you looked at Bishon's or Yorkie's?  Both are small and friendly. :)
