Marrying a Scottish Citizen when already in Scotland
« on: March 26, 2017, 03:00:41 PM »
Hello All,

I was hoping to get some clarification about the process of a US citizen marrying a Scottish citizen. I will be traveling to Scotland to be with him shortly and if all goes well we are planning to marry. I will already be in Scotland so I will not be eligible for fiance visa. Can we just get married there when we are ready?

And then after marriage what will I need in order to be able to live and work there with him? This is a legitimate love relationship I just want to be able to make a living so that we are able to build a life together.

Any answers will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance.

Hi Sunstar,

It's quite a bit more complicated than that. I'll leave folks who have actually gotten married in Scotland to answer the details. It's slightly different than in England, but it's not easy.

Cheers
The usual. American girl meets British guy. They fall into like, then into love. Then there was the big decision. The American traveled across the pond to join the Brit. And life was never the same again.

No. You can not get married unless you have a valid visa that allows you to get married.

If you want to marry in a Scotland you either need to apply for a fiancé visa and receive it before you travel - that will allow you to marry in Scotland and switch to an FLR(M) visa to stay - or you need to apply for a Marriage Visitor Visa and receive it before you travel.... however this is just a visitor visa and you cannot stay in Scotland afterwards - you would have to return to the US to apply for a spousal visa to then move to Scotland after that.

Thank you so much everyone for all your responses! I now understand more about what needs to be done.

Thanks!
