Renewing US passport from UK.
« on: April 02, 2017, 08:01:48 PM »
Hi all. My American passport expires in February 2018. We are away in May and September this year and will be applying after we come home from holiday in May. The embassy website says to fill out DS-82, but when I click on the link out being up the electronic version of form DS-11. Is this what I fill out? Or do I need to contact them to get DS-82

I'm assuming you've read the requirements for renewing a US passport by mail, and that you are eligible?

If all you need is the basic DS-82, you can get it here:

https://www.state.gov/documents/organization/212241.pdf

But please check whether there is anything different about the DS-82 when renewing out of the US.

The DS-11 is for children and first-time passport applications, so I don't think it would apply to you.

Just be sure to mail the DS-82 to the US embassy in the UK, not to the US address listed on the DS-82.

And if anyone else knows differently, please correct me! I'm only going by research--I had an issue with renewing my passport, so I had to investigate.

Good luck!

I renewed my passport abroad in Dublin,Ireland.

All I had to do was fill out the standard renewal document. I don't know the actual
Name but it's the one you would send if you were doing it by post. Except being abroad you will do in person.  You make an appointment at the embassy(make sure you request passport photos that are us size!) and the taken care of the rest at the appointment. Mine took only a week to come in it was the end of the summer rush but my friend did hers in May last year and it took 3 weeks. Helpful hint they will
Let you keep your old
Passport and then go trade it for your new one when it is issued if you need the old one. If you ask and explain why you need it(it may case I was seeing my then boyfriend now husband every two weeks in London so I needed it).

That's your link For the proper information. It says clearly you must apply in person when living in England or wales. :)

You need DS-82 for renewals as DS-11 is for first time applicants.  I found the same thing when I followed the link.  :)

Here it is https://www.state.gov/documents/organization/212241.pdf

That is only if you don't qualify to apply by post.
From your link.

If you are eligible to apply for the passport renewal by courier, you should use this service.  Appointments are limited and are reserved for those who are required to apply in person.  Please see the instructions for your specific passport service for more information.

So if you qualify to renew by post, you must do so.  :)

Ooo, a lot of misinformation in this post.

Jennyeye, you apply by post through the US Embassy.  You'll arrange for the courier Dx to collect your passport and application from you and they will deliver when complete.  It'll take roughly one month to renew (though the embassy keeps very accurate processing times on their website, so use that as an indication before you apply).

Please follow Larabee's instructions.  She's got it right.  :)

Didn't mean to misinform. Was told at the Embassy in Ireland that I'll always have o apply in person if I'm abroad no matter the country. No special
Circumstances with my passport or anything. Guess they just miss informed me! Thanks for the correction anyway guys when I change my surname you will have saved me a trip!

No worries.  You'll probably find lots of things that are different between Ireland and the UK.  Minors are required to renew in person.  But they really don't want all of us adults doing it.  I've heard that 1 in 10 immigrants in the UK are from the USA.  Plus renewing in person (if you don't live in London, Belfast, or Edinburgh) is a big, fat pain in the ass!   ;D  And expensive!

Thanks all. I do qualify to apply by post. But was just concerned as embassy site says ds-82 but the link for ds-82 takes me to ds-11. I'll print off the correct form and post it to the embassy after our trip in May. Thanks again
