Where to live near Camden London
« on: May 22, 2017, 01:28:23 PM »
Hi guys,

DH and I have both got jobs in Camden, London. We are looking for a place to rent as close as possible and have a car also that we wouldn't want to let go of. Our budget is about £1200 pcm. Is there anywhere you guys can suggest? A teeny shoe box is fine as long as it's safe and within a commutable distance by the tube. There are only two of us, no kids.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I don't even know where to start.

You could try one of the web sites that specialise in picking a place to live based upon your destination and desired commute.  A bit of googling turned up commutefrom.com but I've never tried it.

I'm not sure I'm urban and tough enough to live in Camden with a car, but that's just me.  I doubt any place in Camden is safe.

I can recommend a fantastic ice cream place in Camden Market, called Chin Chin .  They make every order fresh out of cream and liquid carbon dioxide .  Sorry for that hi jack

Forget to mention, the obvious place to start is rightmove or zopla.

I have tried those websites you have mentioned. I was just seeing if anyone has real world experience of living in any of the surrounding areas and what to look out for.

Once as a student I lived just off Holloway Road.  My little neighborhood was quiet and not too expensive, although this was 2013.  The Piccadilly Line goes right there and there are some pubs/cafes/shops in the area although it does have some rough areas.  I felt safe most of the time, though.

This is the neighborhood:

If you want to be practically on top of Camden, Kentish Town is great, and you could probably find something within your budget, though not sure that the cost of parking would be covered in that budget. Having a car in London is expensive as all get-out.

If you don't mind a 20-minute commute, look along the Overground from Camden Road station -- Kilburn to the west would be in-budget, and Stoke Newington to the east as well. I live in Kilburn, and I adore it, although I realise it could be an acquired taste. My best mate lives in Stokey and really likes the neighbourhood feel, though he mostly takes advantage of the pubs and not the green spaces.

My husband used to live in Muswell Hill which is just a few stops beyond Camden on the Northern Line. It was a really nice area! I'm not sure about housing in your budget but I'd assume you could find something.
