Helloo from New York!
« on: September 09, 2018, 08:22:38 PM »
HI everyone! I'm Amity! I recently married the love of my life, the dapper Norwich Englishman Oldpunk, after a whirlwind 12 year courtship!
I have many, many questions to ask, and have been working my way through the various forums/topics for about a year now...so much great advice!

He's been asking a lot of the q's about the visa, i'll probably hit up the moving q's (looks like I'm ditching 75% of my stuff  :o ???  but it's a big adventure that I'm really excited for.

I'm looking forward to meeting all of you -- it's going to be an interesting ride!

One quick question to start: Once we fill in the paperwork and  it get approved, is it true that you have to move within 30 days of the date you filled in?
TIA!

Welcome!  :)

You will have to enter the UK within the validity of the vignette which will be stuck in your passport. This will be a 30 day period which should begin with the date you nominate. If that date has passed, it will usually be made valid from around the time the decision was made.

As larrabee said, you would need to enter the UK within the 30-day validity shown on your vignette.  You will collect your BRP within 10 days of entering, and that BRP is your visa, which will allow you to enter/remain in the UK.  If, after collecting your BRP, you still have loose ends to tie up back in the US, you can temporarily leave the UK to take care of those things as long as the UK is where you will reside.

Thank you both kindly. I'll get the terminology down soon...

So let's say I wanted to move by the end of the year. I put on my application January 1st and start the paperwork now, since it might take up to 12 weeks.
We won't have to leave before January 1st, correct? As well,  can we start filling out the application, keep saving the date as January 1st,  and go back and  amend the date  before we hit "submit?"

One thing to remember is you can only request a date that is 3 months from the application date. 😁
The usual. American girl meets British guy. They fall into like, then into love. Then there was the big decision. The American traveled across the pond to join the Brit. And life was never the same again.

They've changed it to six months.  Finally a change that makes sense!

The application itself doesn't take very long to complete.  The hard part is gathering your evidence.  You should gather all of your evidence and have it in hand BEFORE you click "submit".  Yes, you can start your application and save your progress to return to it at a later time.  Repeat: do not submit your application until you have everything in hand, ready to post to Sheffield.  Once you submit the online portion of the application, you will book and attend an appointment at a USCIS center to give your biometrics (a photograph and your fingerprints).  After you give biometrics, you have five days to post your documents to Sheffield.  So be sure you're ready to send all those bank statements and payslips and stuff before you trigger that countdown.
