Highlights magazine equivalent?
« on: July 23, 2017, 08:35:47 PM »
My daughter really enjoyed her subscription to Highlights magazine in the US and I'm looking for a similar publication in the UK. I know there are LOADS of comic and kids mags and the grandparents certainly indulge in those. I'm looking for something without the plastic toys, and marketing. We liked how Highlights had stories, non-fictions, puzzle type activities, etc.

I don't have any suggestions, sorry. But I did just want to say I LOVE HIGHLIGHTS!

My favourite magazine as a kid. Well that and the Disney Adventure one. Haha.
The usual. American girl meets British guy. They fall into like, then into love. Then there was the big decision. The American traveled across the pond to join the Brit. And life was never the same again.

I loved it too! I was so glad it's still around. They even do a younger one that we started getting when she was 2.

This one is always advertised in the Guardian, no idea of quality:

https://www.aquila.co.uk/

There's also a national geographic kids edition that is very popular.  My girl used to like it but it's pricey and comes with plastic.

There's also a weekly newspaper for kids sold at Tesco, no plastic and probably the highest quality.

Thanks! Might give that one a try. It actually came up as a google ad when I was trying to buy an International subscription to Highlights.

My mother in law gets these for our daughter which she enjoys but it's not highlights by any means. I can't believe those still exist I loved them!

I bought 12 issues of this: http://www.okido.co.uk/ and I'm going to suggest "Wildlife" or Nat Geo as a gift for Christmas from her grandparents here (they're animal lovers).

My daughter is 5 so I think "Aquila" is better in a year or two. She's got great reading comprehension and vocab, but emotionally she's still not ready for books/mags/films aiming toward the 8-12 crowd. It looks excellent though!

Highlights customer service is no help with their site so I'm going to have them sent to my parents' house in the states and it'll be a treat when we visit or if they can send them over. I'm guessing growing up with "Highlights" is why I'm such a magazine junky--already sorted my "The New Yorker" print subscription because online just ain't the same.
