Are we getting an actual hurricane??!!
I just hope that more people will ignore the fatalism of the argument that we are beyond repair. We are not beyond repair. We are never beyond repair. - AOC

While it is still a hurricane at the moment, it won't be classed a hurricane anymore by the time it reaches the UK :).

At the moment it's due to reach Ireland on Monday.

Lol - I know... but that actually wasn't a hurricane in the first place, that one was a rapidly developing mid-latitude depression (hurricanes form in the tropics).

Ophelia is still currently classed as a hurricane right now, but once it reaches the UK, it will be an ex-tropical storm because it has left tropical waters.

(btw, I met Michael Fish once... he was the commencement speaker at my undergrad graduation ceremony... and that was 5 years before I even decided to become a meteorologist)

@ksand24

This segment on john Oliver made me think of you with the many weather maps of hilariously amusing positioning. (I wasn't sure where to put this but figured a weather thread was appropriate) warning ... depending on the sensitivity of bosses this may be questionably nsfw.

Lol - I do have to be very careful when writing forecasts which require me to draw areas on a map :P.

That's mentioned in this song.

Oh, wow - the nostalgia... I was born in the early 80s so I remember a lot of the things in the video :).

To be fair, the hurricane that Michael Fish talked about about was NOT the same storm that hit the UK. He was referring to Hurricane Floyd, which was in the Florida Keys at the time... however he didn't mention Florida in the forecast, and so people thought he was talking about the storm that was due to hit the UK later that day. It was just unfortunate that the storm ended up being much stronger than expected and caused so much damage and devastation, because everyone though that a hurricane had actually hit and that Michael Fish got it wrong.

Thankfully the night passed and could not see any damage done in the area when i was on the way to work.

However there are reports of a storm heading for the UK over the weekend. Get rid of one and another turns up so soon. Fingers crossed this isn't the case.

Looking at the charts, there's another system due to reach the UK on Friday/Saturday.

Let's hope nothing materialises. I want a quiet weekend, not a weekend where the winds are causing havoc!

Then again, it'll keep the kids indoors and it'll be quiet! Well somewhat quiet.
